Shock for Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers, especially those who came of age in the 1960s, have prided themselves on doing everything better than their parents’generation. But a new study indicates that in terms of health, Boomers are worse off than the previous generation.

Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), researchers from West Virginia School of
Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina found that compared to their elders, more Boomers were obese (38.7% vs. 37.2%), had high cholesterol (73.5% vs. 33.8%), high blood pressure (43% vs. 36.4%) and diabetes (15.5% vs. 12%). Boomers were also found to be more sedentary (52.2% vs. 17.4%) and regularly exercised less than their elders (35% vs. 49.9%).

Baby Boomers are living longer but not healthier. Why? Working longer for less money, wired 24/7, can’t afford medical care, more stress due to economic downturn, caring for children and aging parents at the same time, eating on the run…Your thoughts? Access the JAMA study at
