The Health Benefits of Coffee

For decades the public was cautioned about drinking coffee. Negative effects included anxiety, increased blood pressure and even association with some cancers. With the discovery of a plethora of beneficial phytochemicals in coffee, the once maligned beverage has a new image.

A recent review of studies from 1990 to 2012, published in the European journal Maturitas, revealed that in addition to increasing mental clarity, coffee is associated with a reduction in the incidence of diabetes and liver disease. Contrary to previous beliefs, coffee does not have a negative effect on various forms of cardiovascular disease. It also appears to be protective for Parkinson’s disease and potentially for osteoporosis.
